06:24 AM EST, 12/04/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) said late Tuesday that it will seek proposals from nuclear energy providers to generate between one and four gigawatts of power capacity in the US to meet its "AI innovation and sustainability objectives."
The Facebook parent company said it plans to begin receiving the new nuclear generation capacity beginning in the early 2030s.
Meta said its upcoming AI pursuits will require more electricity. "We believe that nuclear energy can help provide firm, baseload power to support the growth needs of the electric grids that power both our data centers (the physical infrastructure on which Meta's platforms operate) as well as the communities around them," the company said.
Because nuclear projects require more capital and regulatory scrutiny than other sustainable power sources, "we need to engage nuclear energy projects earlier in their development," the company said.
