09:04 AM EDT, 07/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) has until Sept. 1 to address concerns that its "pay or consent" model might violate EU consumer law, the EU said Monday.
The EU's Consumer Protection Cooperation Network said n a letter that Meta may be "misleading consumers by using the word 'free'" for users who don't want to pay to subscribe, while requiring users to accept that the company can monetize their personal data through personalized ads.
CPC authorities also said Meta is "confusing users" by forcing them to access different parts of the terms of service or privacy policy to see how the company will use their preferences, personal data, and user-generated data to show them personalized ads.
The EU said if the company doesn't address such concerns, CPC authorities can take enforcement actions, including sanctions.
Meta didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
