Meta to Ban Kremlin-Controlled Russian Media Outlets From Platforms
Sep 17, 2024 3:06 AM

05:55 AM EDT, 09/17/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms ( META ) said Monday it is banning RT and other Russian state-affiliated media outlets from its platforms, according to an unnamed company spokesperson.

The decision by the parent company of Facebook and Instagram comes days after the US State Department announced sanctions against Kremlin-affiliated information outlets over allegations of interference in the upcoming presidential elections.

"After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets: Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity," the spokesperson said.

The ban should take effect within days, the spokesperson added.

Meta also said that it expects Russian state-controlled media to try to evade detection and by engaging in "deceptive influence attempts across the internet."
