06:50 AM EDT, 10/08/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Meta Platforms' ( META ) Oversight Board Trust said Tuesday it established a new independent body, Appeals Centre Europe, to resolve disputes in the European Union against the content moderation decisions of Facebook, TikTok, and Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) YouTube ( GOOG ).
"As a certified body under the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), the Appeals Centre will offer impartial, swift, affordable and accessible redress to users and will play an important role in the new regulatory landscape in the European Union," the Oversight Board added.
The Appeals Centre is a separate legal body to the Oversight Board and the Trust will not offer additional grant funding, the board said.
According to the board, the new body will investigate disputes raised by every eligible person and organization that appeals to determine whether platforms' decisions are "consistent" with their content rules, including the rules or exceptions they have enacted for human rights.
"At TikTok, we believe in handling content moderation disputes fairly and transparently," a TikTok spokesperson told MT Newswires in an email. "We look forward to working with the European Appeals Centre as they begin handling cases."
YouTube ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
