10:32 AM EST, 03/08/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) said Friday that the Russian state sponsored group Midnight Blizzard has hacked certain source code repositories and internal systems of the company.
On Jan. 12, the company's corporate email systems were targeted by Midnight Blizzard, also known as Nobelium, and the company's security team initiated a response. To date, the company said there was no evidence suggesting any compromise of its customer-facing systems, Microsoft ( MSFT ) said in a blog post.
"It is apparent that Midnight Blizzard is attempting to use secrets of different types it has found," Microsoft ( MSFT ) said. "Some of these secrets were shared between customers and Microsoft ( MSFT ) in email, and as we discover them in our exfiltrated email, we have been and are reaching out to these customers to assist them in taking mitigating measures. Midnight Blizzard has increased the volume of some aspects of the attack, such as password sprays, by as much as 10-fold in February, compared to the already large volume we saw in January 2024," Microsoft ( MSFT ) added.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) said it has increased security measures against Midnight Blizzard, implementing enhanced controls and monitoring. "Our active investigations of Midnight Blizzard activities are ongoing, and findings of our investigations will continue to evolve," Microsoft ( MSFT ) said.
Microsoft ( MSFT ) didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
