Microsoft, Google Events Provide Opportunity to Close Gap With OpenAI, Wedbush Says

11:21 AM EDT, 05/20/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) and Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google's ( GOOG ) developer conferences are vital events in the artificial intelligence revolution as the companies plan to catch up with OpenAI, Wedbush said in a note Tuesday.

The Microsoft Build and Google I/O conferences prioritize seeking developers to create AI apps and use cases on their platforms as agentic AI transformation speeds up, analysts including Daniel Ives said.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) detailed at its ongoing conference how AI agents are enabling companies to manage the Windows operating system as well as code across functional verticals, according to the note. Wedbush said Microsoft ( MSFT ) expects 1.3 billion agents to be deployed by 2028.

The Google I/O conference is crucial for the company amid concerns around the future of search in an AI-driven world, Wedbush said. The company has been actively innovating and closing the gap in the AI race through its Gemini AI services, the brokerage noted, adding that it expects Google ( GOOG ) to unveil new AI innovations coming to Google ( GOOG ) and Gemini for developers.

"We believe Gemini is help closing the gap vs. ChatGPT, and Google I/O is a key event to highlight AI innovations and technology coming to the Google ( GOOG ) developer world. We believe Google ( GOOG ) is heading into its innovation phase of AI, and the worries around search days in the rear view mirror are way overdone," Wedbush said in the note.
