Microsoft Launches Lightweight Generative AI Models
Apr 23, 2024 12:33 PM

03:12 PM EDT, 04/23/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) said Tuesday it has launched an artificial intelligence model that can be trained on smaller amounts of data.

The Phi-3-mini, a so-called small language model, was made available on Hugging Face and Ollama and does not require as much computing resource as its large language model counterparts, according to Microsoft ( MSFT ).

The company also announced it would be launching two other variations within the Phi-3 family of AI models called Phi-3-small and Phi-3-medium that would be able to ingest more data than the Phi-3-mini.

Small language models are designed to run locally on a device as opposed to the cloud and are generally intended for tasks that do not require extensive reasoning or quick responses, Microsoft ( MSFT ) said.
