Microsoft, OpenAI Facing Lawsuit From Nonprofit News Organization for Alleged Copyright Infringement
Jun 27, 2024 12:59 PM

03:41 PM EDT, 06/27/2024 (MT Newswires) -- The Center for Investigative Reporting on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI for allegedly using its content without permission or compensation.

In a lawsuit filed with the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, the nonprofit news organization claimed OpenAI and Microsoft ( MSFT ) used its stories to train and improve their generative artificial intelligence products.

"For-profit corporations like OpenAI and Microsoft ( MSFT ) can't simply treat the work of nonprofit and independent publishers as free raw material for their products," CIR Chief Executive Monika Bauerlein said in a statement.

The CIR said its lawsuit is based on OpenAI's alleged violations of the Copyright Act and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA.

The CIR is seeking damages of no less than $750 per infringed work and $2,500 per DMCA violation, and a trial by jury, according to the court filing.

OpenAI and Microsoft ( MSFT ) did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
