Microsoft to Invest $3.3 Billion in Wisconsin to Expand Cloud, AI Infrastructure Capacity
May 8, 2024 11:02 AM

01:36 PM EDT, 05/08/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) said Wednesday it will invest $3.3 billion through the end of 2026 to develop a datacenter campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, in a bid to increase its cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure capacity in the US.

The technology giant expects the project to create 2,300 union construction jobs in the area by 2025. The project is part of a wider investment package planned for Wisconsin. The company said the investments will be rolled out in "a four-part strategy."

"We will use the power of AI to help advance the next generation of manufacturing companies, skills and jobs in Wisconsin and across the country," Microsoft ( MSFT ) President Brad Smith said.

Separately, the White House said Microsoft's ( MSFT ) investment will help create 2,000 permanent jobs over time. "The datacenter will be built on the same land as a failed $10 billion investment from Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn six years ago, which left behind Wisconsin residents and workers."

Microsoft ( MSFT ) said it will work with Gateway Technical College to build a data center academy to train and certify more than 1,000 students in five years. The company will also set up a manufacturing-focused AI co-innovation lab on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that is expected to serve 270 local companies by 2030.

The company will partner with United Way Wisconsin, United Way Racine, and other community partners, to upskill more than 100,000 locals on generative AI by 2030. Microsoft ( MSFT ) and Gateway Technical College will help train and certify 3,000 local AI software developers, the company said.

In January 2023, Microsoft ( MSFT ) announced a "multi-billion dollar investment" in OpenAI, the parent company of AI chatbot ChatGPT.

Last month, Microsoft ( MSFT ) logged stronger-than-expected fiscal third-quarter results as a double-digit gain in its cloud business helped boost overall revenue.
