Microsoft to Invest $4 Billion to Build New Wisconsin Data Center
Sep 19, 2025 2:17 AM

03:42 PM EDT, 09/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT ) said Thursday it will build a new data center in Wisconsin with a $4 billion investment, taking its total committed amount for the state to more than $7 billion.

The facility will take three years to be completed. It will be of a similar size and scale as the $3.3 billion one the technology giant is developing in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, it said in a blog post.

The Mount Pleasant facility, dubbed Fairwater, will be the "world's most powerful" artificial intelligence data center, Microsoft ( MSFT ) President Brad Smith said in the blog. The company is on track to bring the project online early next year, he added.

The Mount Pleasant facility will house "hundreds of thousands of the world's most powerful" Nvidia ( NVDA ) graphics processing units, Smith wrote. "These processors will handle training for frontier AI models -- delivering 10 times the performance of today's fastest supercomputers."

Microsoft ( MSFT ) will employ some 500 full-time employees at the project once it becomes fully operational, with that tally rising to about 800 upon the completion of the planned new datacenter, Smith said.

"In addition to our Fairwater datacenter in Wisconsin, we also have multiple identical Fairwater datacenters under construction in other locations across the US," Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of cloud and AI, said in a separate blogpost.

On Tuesday, Microsoft ( MSFT ) said it will invest $30 billion in the UK's AI infrastructure for a four-year period through 2028, with half of the planned investment to support its current operations across the country.

Earlier this month, Dutch technology firm Nebius Group ( NBIS ) said it signed a five-year commercial agreement to provide Microsoft ( MSFT ) access to dedicated GPU infrastructure capacity at its new data center in Vineland, New Jersey. The contract has a total value of $17.4 billion through 2031, with potential to rise to about $19.4 billion, if Microsoft ( MSFT ) opts to acquire additional services or capacity.
