Microsoft-Backed Open AI Launches New Government Initiative, Wins $200 Million Defense Contract

06:55 AM EDT, 06/17/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI said Monday it is launching a new initiative called OpenAI for Government.

The parent of generative artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT said its first partnership under initiative will be a pilot program with the US Department of Defense.

The contract has a $200 million ceiling and will bring OpenAI's expertise to help the defense department "identify and prototype how frontier AI can transform its administrative operations," the company said.
