Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Faces Austrian Privacy Complaint Over False Data on Individuals
Apr 29, 2024 6:38 AM

09:13 AM EDT, 04/29/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI allegedly refuses to correct the tendency of its AI chatbot ChatGPT to generate false information about people, privacy advocacy group NOYB said Monday in a complaint filed with the Austrian data protection authority.

The complainant in NOYB's case, who is a public figure, had asked ChatGPT about his birthday and the chatbot repeatedly made up incorrect information instead of saying it does not have the necessary data, according to the group.

OpenAI told the complainant that it was not possible to prevent ChatGPT from displaying such inaccurate data, and also refused to provide information on how it processes data, NOYB said.

NOYB said it had filed a complaint requesting the Austrian privacy regulator to investigate OpenAI's data processing and how its large language models handle personal data.

OpenAI did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
