04:09 AM EDT, 08/22/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Microsoft ( MSFT )-backed (MSFT) OpenAI is looking to open its first office in India later in 2025, multiple media outlets reported Friday, citing a statement from the company.

The ChatGPT maker has established a legal entity in the country and has begun hiring for its local office in New Delhi, The Wall Street Journal reported. The move is part of the company's efforts to meet growing artificial intelligence demand in India.

"Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India," OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman reportedly said.

Microsoft ( MSFT ) and OpenAI didn't immediately respond to requests for comment by MT Newswires.
