04:05 PM EDT, 10/08/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Milton will likely be an "extremely dangerous" hurricane that is expected to make landfall in Florida on Wednesday night, the National Hurricane Center said in a public advisory issued Tuesday.
"Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters find that Milton's intensity has rebounded," according to the advisory. "Today is the last full day for Florida residents to get their families and homes ready and evacuate if told to do so."
Latest data suggest that maximum sustained winds have jumped to roughly 155 miles an hour with higher gusts, the NHC said. "While fluctuations in intensity are expected, Milton is forecast to remain an extremely dangerous hurricane through landfall in Florida."
The hurricane's center is forecast to move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and approach the west-central coast of Florida through Wednesday. It is likely to make landfall along the west-central coast of Florida late Wednesday and move east-northeastward across central Florida through Thursday, according to the advisory.
"The latest from Hurricane Milton suggests the Category 4 storm could cause as much as $175
billion in damage," Stifel said in a Tuesday note.
Hundreds of flights into and departing from Florida airports had been cancelled by Tuesday late afternoon, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware. Tampa International, Orlando International, Southwest Florida International, and Sarasota-Bradenton International were among the affected airports, according to the data.
Besides airlines, Milton will also impact certain theme parks and cruise lines.
United Parks & Resorts' ( PRKS ) Busch Gardens Tampa will be closed from Tuesday to Thursday, while Seaworld Orlando and Aquatica Orlando will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, according to information posted on the United Parks website.
Comcast's ( CMCSA ) Universal Orlando Resort said Tuesday that Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure and Universal CityWalk will be closed Thursday, while Universal Volcano Bay will be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
On Monday, Walt Disney ( DIS ) said its Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, the Copper Creek Cabins at Disney's ( DIS ) Wilderness Lodge, and the Treehouse Villas at Disney's ( DIS ) Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa were scheduled to temporarily close starting 11 am ET on Wednesday. Disney's ( DIS ) Fort Wilderness and Treehouse Villas are expected to remain closed through Sunday, while Copper Creek Cabins will likely reopen Friday.
Carnival (CCL, CUK) has modified or cancelled certain ship itineraries and is monitoring several schedules for further adjustments in the light of the hurricane, the cruise operator said Tuesday in an update published on its website.
