11:30 AM EDT, 03/12/2025 (MT Newswires) -- The UK's Competition and Markets Authority said Wednesday that the mobile browser market, dominated by Apple ( AAPL ) and Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google ( GOOG ), is "not working well" for UK consumers and businesses, limiting innovation in the country.
Most of the concerns are related to Apple's ( AAPL ) policies about accessing the web on its devices, according to the CMA, citing the final report by its independent inquiry group.
The regulator said that per the final report's recommendation, the CMA should look into imposing interventions if Apple ( AAPL ) and/or Google ( GOOG ) are designated as having "strategic market status" under new digital markets competition rules.
Interventions could include improving the ability of other browsers to compete by offering new features to consumers, the CMA said.
"We have concerns with this report and believe the remedies it discusses would undermine privacy, security, and the overall user experience," Apple ( AAPL ) said in a statement emailed to MT Newswires. "We will continue to engage constructively with the CMA to best address their concerns."
"Android's openness has helped to expand choice, reduce prices and democratize access to smartphones and apps," a Google ( GOOG ) spokesperson told MT Newswires. "We remain committed to open platforms that help developers build successful businesses, and will work constructively with the CMA to deliver a pro-innovation, evidence-based and predictable regulatory regime that enables UK growth."
