Dec 20, 2024 10:51 AM

01:19 PM EST, 12/20/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Netflix ( NFLX ) has secured exclusive rights in the US to stream the next two editions of the FIFA Women's World Cup, the parties said Friday.

The tournament will appear on a streaming service for the first time, Netflix ( NFLX ) said. In a separate statement, FIFA said the Women's World Cup is the first competition "to be acquired in full" by the streaming giant.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Netflix ( NFLX ) shares were up 1.8% in Friday afternoon trade and have jumped about 89% so far this year.

The 2027 edition of the tournament will take place in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, while the host nation of the 2031 edition is yet to be decided by the FIFA Congress. Netflix ( NFLX ) said it will produce exclusive documentary programming in the lead-up to the event.

The recent boxing match between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano became the most watched professional women's sports event in US history, amassing 74 million live viewers globally, according to the company.

"Our record-breaking success with Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor demonstrated the massive appetite for women's sports and live programming," Netflix ( NFLX ) Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said. "I've seen the fandom for the FIFA Women's World Cup grow tremendously."

FIFA President Gianni Infantino called the deal with Netflix ( NFLX ) "a landmark moment" for sports media rights. The deal includes Puerto Rico and covers all languages, FIFA said.

The Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight last month attracted 108 million people, making it the most-streamed sporting event of all time, Netflix ( NFLX ) said. The company will stream two National Football League games on Christmas Day.

In October, Netflix ( NFLX ) posted higher-than-expected third-quarter financial results as its new subscriber count surpassed Wall Street's estimates.
