11:35 AM EDT, 07/24/2024 (MT Newswires) -- New Gold ( NGD ) reported an employee operating a piece of equipment in the open pit at the Rainy River Mine in northwestern Ontario was fatally injured early on Wednesday morning.

"The company is working closely with local authorities and an investigation is underway. Operations have been voluntarily suspended. The thoughts of management are with the family, friends and colleagues who have been impacted by this tragic incident," it said in a release.

The company's shares were last seen up $0.12 to $3.15 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
