New Zealand to Proceed With Bill Requiring Tech Platforms to Pay for Local Media Content
Jul 2, 2024 5:18 AM

07:59 AM EDT, 07/02/2024 (MT Newswires) -- New Zealand's government will proceed with a bill that would require digital technology platforms to pay local media companies for news, Communications Minister Paul Goldsmith said.

Goldsmith said the government plans to progress the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill to "support our local media companies to earn revenue for the news they produce."

Under the proposal, technology firms such as Facebook owner Meta (META) and Alphabet's (GOOG) Google ( GOOG ) may be forced to enter into content supply deals with local media outlets.

The bill would be redesigned to align it more closely with Australia's digital bargaining law, Goldsmith said.

Meta and Google ( GOOG ) did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
