Petrol and diesel prices: HPCL, BPCL, IOC are each losing over Rs 7 per litre on fuel sold, says Nomura

The sharp decline in marketing margins due to rising crude oil prices and product spreads will impact the profitability of oil marketing companies (OMCs) in the July-September quarter, according to a Nomura report.

Among these state-run downstream refiners, Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd. (HPCL) will bear the maximum brunt given its higher share of the marketing segment as part of its earnings.

The blended marketing margin, which represents the profit earned by selling fuels at petrol pumps, declined sharply to a negative Rs 4.7 per litre from a negative Rs 2.9 per litre in the week ended September 24, 2023, as per the Nomura report.

India's food regulator wants you to stop packing food in newspapers to avoid health risks

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged both consumers and food vendors to stop using newspapers for packing, serving and storing food items. Expressing concern over the use of newspapers, FSSAI's CEO, G Kamala Vardhana Rao, highlighted significant health risks associated with this practice with an aim to alert all stakeholders.

Rao explained that newspapers are often subjected to various environmental conditions during distribution, making them susceptible to contamination by bacteria, viruses or other pathogens that may transfer to food, potentially causing foodborne illnesses and other health issues when ingested.
