Israel Hamas war LIVE Updates: Over 1,500 dead in Israel and Gaza, US reaffirms support to free hostages

Over 900 have been reported dead in Israel and 687 in Gaza, taking the toll to 1,587. Meanwhile, Hamas reportedly claimed to fight Israeli forces in parts of the West Bank on Tuesday. Several foreign nationals are among those killed and held hostage. As the toll continues to mount, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Monday to "change the Middle East" as the army pounded the Gaza Strip with airstrikes.

"What Hamas will experience will be difficult and terrible," he said. Meanwhile, Hamas, which took 150 hostages in its surprise weekend assault on southern Israel, threatened to kill them if Israeli air strikes continue targeting Gaza residents without warning, news agency AFP reported.

Hamas doesn't represent the 'legitimate aspirations' of Palestinians, say US, UK and allies on Israel war

US defence stocks jump while Israel-linked stocks fall globally

Stock traders sent defence companies surging in US markets as an attack on Israel from the Gaza-based militant group Hamas renewed Wall Street’s focus on the security industry.

Shares of arms makers — including Northrop Gruman Corp, L3Harris Technologies Inc., Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc., Lockheed Martin Corp. and General Dynamics Corp. — led gains in the S&P 500 Index on Monday. The stocks each gained at least 8% in the session, the most in more than three years.

The assault on Israel is sparking fresh concern about geopolitical risk among investors who’ve already been grappling with the impact of elevated interest rates and signs of trouble in China’s economy.
