12:22 PM EDT, 09/03/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Nexstar Media ( NXST ) Chief Executive Officer Perry Sook said Wednesday that the US Federal Communications Commission could change the national viewership cap "as soon as this month."
Speaking at Citigroup's 2025 Global TMT Conference, Sook said that with the current administration and the FCC being "pro deregulation," the agency could tweak rules that restrict the number of stations owned in local markets by the end of the year.
Sook added that if Nexstar Media's ( NXST ) deal to acquire media company Tegna ( TGNA ) is approved, it would control more than 20% of the local television station inventory in the US, reaching about 80% of the country's population.
The current FCC rule caps the national viewership for a single broadcaster at about 39% of US television households.
