The expected recovery in two-wheeler sales during the festive season may have come a cropper, especially in the low-end 100cc segment, Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj said.

Bajaj was responding to a report by the Federation of Auto Dealers Association (FADA), which said two-wheeler demand during the festive season will be lower than last year.

Bajaj told CNBC-TV18 that sales for the company’s 100 cc motorcycles were down 30 percent even as premium motorcycle sales witnessed growth.

He added that 3-wheeler sales were at 40 percent of last year.

Bajaj further said that he was not upbeat about demand coming back during the rest of the fiscal year, and added that the two-wheeler industry had taken a big cost increase because of regulations such as ABS, BS 6 etc, and demand hit because of the “draconian lockdown”.
