06:04 AM EST, 11/08/2024 (MT Newswires) -- NRG Energy ( NRG ) said Thursday that it agreed to partner with Renew Home, a virtual power plant or VPP company, to improve its residential VPP capabilities.

The partners target to improve grid resiliency in Texas by distributing hundreds of thousands of VPP-enabled smart thermostats by 2035 and establishing a 1-gigawatt VPP powered by artificial intelligence and enabled by Google Cloud technology.

NRG said it agreed on a multi-year technology transformation deal with Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google Cloud to use the latter's technology in wind and weather forecasting and predictive pricing models, among others.

NRG and Renew Home expect to launch their VPP program in the spring of 2025.
