OpenAI set to make first ad foray with Super Bowl spot, Wall Street Journal reports
Feb 5, 2025 6:03 PM

Feb 5 (Reuters) - ChatGPT maker OpenAI is expected to air its first TV commercial during

Sunday's Super Bowl, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with

the matter.

The Super Bowl is among the world's most coveted televised events for advertisers given its

huge guaranteed audience, with a premium placed on creativity as Super Bowl commercials can

generate outsized buzz.

The Super Bowl ad would be OpenAI's first foray into commercial advertising, the newspaper

said. Rivals such as Google ran ads promoting its AI prowess during last year's Super Bowl.

OpenAI didn't immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The price for a 30-second ad spot during the 2025 Super Bowl has gone for up to $8 million,

Adweek's Chief Content Officer Zoe Ruderman said, a rise from around $7 million for a similar

spot on CBS last year.

The 2024 Super Bowl drew an estimated 210 million viewers. The 59th Super Bowl is scheduled

to take place on February 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET (2330 GMT). The NFL championship game will take

place in New Orleans at the Caesars Superdome, home to the New Orleans Saints, with a capacity

of 83,000 spectators.

Sam Altman's OpenAI, which is part-owned by Microsoft ( MSFT ), released ChatGPT in late

2022 and reached over 300 million weekly active users two years later.

The AI developer, which is in talks to raise up to $40 billion at a valuation of $300

billion, hired its first chief marketing officer, Kate Rouch, in December last year, media

reports said.
