01:28 PM EDT, 09/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- More than 1,000 flights within, into or out of the US were canceled while over 2,000 flights were delayed after midday Thursday, according to the FlightAware website, as Hurricane Helene moved toward Florida.
Southwest Airlines ( LUV ) had 201 cancellations, followed by Delta Air Lines ( DAL ) with 135 and American Airlines ( AAL ) with 121, according to FlightAware.
Airports in Tampa, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale have issued warnings, and major carriers released travel advisories for southeast US and the Gulf of Mexico, a Reuters report said.
Hurricane Helene, currently a Category 2 hurricane, is strengthening and expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches the Florida Big Bend coast, Florida officials said.
