Reliance Jio GigaFiber impact: Airtel, Tata Sky, BSNL offer cheap internet plans
Aug 23, 2018 3:12 AM

Reliance Jio's 4G service has disrupted the telecom market and prompted all other service providers such as Airtel, Idea, Vodafone and BSNL to reduce the rates.

Jio’s entry in mobile services led to free voice call for the first time, and data prices dipped by over 95 percent since the time it commenced services.

After 4G mobile services, Reliance Jio has started registration for optical fibre based fixed-line broadband service through which it has claimed to offer download speed of one gigabit per second. It is expected to roll out at the end of this year all over India.

Several existing broadband operators led by Airtel, BSNL and Tata Sky are gearing up for the challenge by reducing the price.

Here is a look at the prices of different service providers.

Jio GigaFiber

Jio claims to offer around 10 times more speed to home users. Though the company has not disclosed its price yet, however, it is currently offering a preview offer with high-speed internet up to 100Mbps for 90 days along with a monthly data quota of 100 GB and a complimentary access to a host of Jio's premium apps.

Jio GigaFiber is expected to offer unlimited broadband plans starting from at Rs 500 along with a host of other facilities, according to various reports.

The company is also coming up with various offers ranging up to Rs 1,500.

There is no installation charges but the customer has to pay a refundable security deposit of Rs 4,500 for the installation of the ONT device (GigaHub Home Gateway).

Airtel

Facing the heat, Airtel has introduced new plans with cheaper broadband rates and completely removed its fair usage policy (FUP) limits for its broadband customers. Now the customers will get unlimited data.

Airtel's cheapest unlimited plan in Delhi starts at Rs 799 and the company offers data of 100GB at 40 Mbps speed. Other Airtel broadband plans start at Rs 999, Rs 1,299, Rs 1,999 and Rs 2,199 unlimited data usage at speeds up to 100-300 Mbps.

The broadband plans are slightly different in other cities.

In Mumbai, the unlimited data plan starts at Rs 699 at 8Mbps speed. But in some tier-2 cities, this offer starts at Rs 499.

BSNL

BSNL is also gearing up for the competition by revising its broadband plan. The company offers 700GB data with 20 Mbps speed for Rs 699. After the data limit is over, the speed will be reduced to 2Mbps.

Tata Sky broadband

The company is currently operating at 12 cities. These cities are Mumbai, Thane, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Noida, Pune, Bhopal, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Mira Bhayandar (Maharashtra).

The offer varies up to one, three, five, nine and 12-month packages. The company is providing free routers. It offers unlimited monthly data plans of 5Mbps, 10Mbps, 30Mbps, 50Mbps, and 100Mbps speeds priced at Rs. 999, Rs. 1,150, Rs. 1,500, Rs. 1,800, and Rs. 2,500 respectively.

Disclosure: RIL, the promoter of Reliance Jio, also controls Network18, the parent company of CNBCTV18.com.
