USA-ELECTION/GOVERNOR-VIRGINIA
Moderate Democrat Spanberger to take on Republican Earle-Spears
for Virginia governor
Moderate Democrat Abigail Spanberger helped her party recapture
control of the U.S. House of Representatives during Republican
Donald Trump's first term in office. Now out of Congress, the
former CIA officer is challenging Virginia Lieutenant Governor
Winsome Earle-Sears for the state's top job. The race is seen as
something of a referendum in the state on Trump's first year in
office and could help Democrats determine what sort of
candidates they want to put forward in the 2026 midterm
elections. The state's primary is set for Tuesday, though the
two parties have already settled on their candidates for the top
job. Either would be the state's first woman governor,
Earle-Sears would also be the state's first Black woman
governor.

REFILE: Inspired by Ukraine, Taiwan turns to sea drones to help
defend against Chinese invasion
Used to great effect by Ukraine in the Black Sea against
Russia, Taiwan is drawing inspiration from that to explore how
it could use such explosive-packed drones as an effective and
low-cost way to fend off a Chinese invasion. Taiwan drone maker
Thunder Tiger showcased their latest sea drone, Sea Shark 800,
that will be feature in an exhibition next week, where 12
companies, both Taiwanese and foreign, will be pitching their
sea drones with the hopes they will be chosen to equip Taiwan's
new sea drone fleet. This is part of Taiwan's "asymmetric
warfare" strategy of using small, highly mobile and precision
weapons to defend against the numeric superiority of China's
military.
