Rosenberg Research Notes Trump's Unlikely Catalyst for Canada
Mar 3, 2025 5:47 AM

08:22 AM EST, 03/03/2025 (MT Newswires) -- If anything, Canadians should be thanking Donald Trump because the fire he has lit is going to cause Canada to wake up and start focusing more on economic independence, seeking out other trading relationships, ending interprovincial barriers to trade and prompting governments to pursue fiscal policies that will create growth in the productive capital stock, said Rosenberg Research.

Even the province of Quebec is feeling more attached now to the rest of the country than ever before, noted Rosenberg Research.

As a country, Canada does have a small gross domestic product, but it's still the same as the states of Michigan, Ohio and Illinois combined, pointed out Rosenberg. It's bigger than New York State and Florida and is not far behind California. So, it's small, but not really that small.

There has never been a recession in Canada that the U.S. hasn't shared together -- in fact, there was one in the U.S. in 2001 that Canada didn't participate in, it added. When you look at what Canada buys in goods and services -- think travel -- from the U.S. annually, you are talking about C$600 billion of economic support from Canada.

"That isn't trivial," according to Rosenberg.
