04:34 AM EDT, 03/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- RTX's (RTX) Pratt & Whitney was among a consortium of international engineering and aviation firms that said Monday that they had successfully tested a jet engine with sustainable fuel in Germany's Hannover.
The aviation fuel was made of hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids synthetic paraffinic kerosine produced by the Finnish oil refinery Neste. The IAE International Aero Engines consortium said it tested the fuel on the same V2500 that currently powers around 3,000 Airbus A320ceo and Embraer ( ERJ ) C-390 Millenium aircraft in operation.
Kim Kinsley, president of the consortium and a vice president at Pratt & Whitney, said the industry would start using the fuel "in the next few years" as part of its stated goal to produce net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
Among the eight companies in the consortium are Japanese Aero Engines and Germany's MTU Aero Engines, which hosted the test site.
