08:05 AM EDT, 05/13/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Investors will find out who Canada's next financr minister will be when Prime Minister Mark Carney announces his slimmer-but-not-slim-cabinet on Tuesday, said Scotiabank.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for around 10:30 a.m. ET Tuesday, noted the bank.
Unconfirmed reports in the press indicate the cabinet will include around 30 ministers. That's smaller than many of former PM Justin Trudeau's cabinets, but not small, and a bigger one than Carney's interim cabinet.
Same, but different, as many carryovers from the prior administration will mix in with some new faces, stated Scotiabank. Who will be the finance minister is closely guarded despite leaks about multiple other posts (Timothy Hodgson in Resources, Sean Fraser in Justice, Chrystia Freeland and Steven Guilbeault both in but unclear doing what, etc.).
Then again, PM Carney is likely to have a very heavy say in finance anyway and perhaps even more so than former PM Trudeau, pointed out the bank. Despite all the billing, that's not terribly leaner than Trudeau's last one at 39.
Ottawa is a bloated government town, captured by "excessive" numbers of civil servants after 10 "explosive" years in terms of their numbers, according to Scotiabank.
The bank doesn't seriously expect a vastly leaner cabinet on Tuesday and history suggests that more time in office only grows their numbers.
