Analysts polled by FactSet expected $0.67.
Revenue for the quarter was $65.41 billion, compared with $74.46 billion a year earlier.
Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected $64.11 billion.
Separately, the company said it commenced a $3.5 billion share buyback program that will run for about three months.
Shell shares gained 1.3% in premarket activity.
