07:05 AM EST, 11/12/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Shell (SHEL) on Tuesday praised the Dutch Court of Appeal of The Hague's decision to overturn a 2021 district court ruling ordering it to reduce its worldwide carbon emissions by 45% by the end of 2030 compared with 2019 levels.
"We are pleased with the court's decision, which we believe is the right one for the global energy transition, the Netherlands and our company," said Shell Chief Executive Wael Sawan.
The lawsuit against Shell was brought by the Dutch environmental group Milieudefensie, other non-government organizations, and a number of private individuals.
Sawan said the company's aim to become a net-zero emissions business by 2050 remains in place. "This includes continuing our work to halve emissions from our operations by 2030," he said.
