Snap Faces DOJ Scrutiny After FTC Complaint
Jan 16, 2025 1:29 PM

04:04 PM EST, 01/16/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Snap's (SNAP) My AI chatbot allegedly risks and harms young users, according to a complaint referred to the Department of Justice by the Federal Trade Commission on Thursday.

The FTC said the complaint is based on an investigation that showed the company is violating or about to violate the law.

Three commissioners voted in favor of the referral in the public interest, while two were recorded as absent from the meeting.

Commissioner Andrew Ferguson opposed the complaint and said the "application of Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act is not only wrong as a matter of statutory interpretation, but is also in direct conflict with the guarantees of the First Amendment."

Snap did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.

Shares of the company were down 5% in recent trading.

Price: 11.22, Change: -0.63, Percent Change: -5.28
