SpiceJet rejigs network, brings more capacity for busy domestic routes
Mar 14, 2019 2:00 PM

After a major setback due to grounding 12 Boeing MAX planes, SpiceJet has started rejigging its network by withdrawing some international routes and deploying the freed up capacity on busy domestic routes, sources privy to the developments in the airline told CNBC-TV18.

The airline now has a fleet of 64 planes, a combination of Boeing 737 New Generation and Bombardier Q400s.

The airline has cancelled Delhi-Kabul flight due to the ongoing closure of Pakistan airspace and the aircraft for this sector has now been put to use for domestic flights.

In addition, the Gurugram-based airline has also cancelled the flights, which were giving low yields and witnessing low load factor such as Ahmedabad-Muscat and has redeployed this capacity on multiple domestic flights, sources in the airline said.

The airline will also add two more aircraft in its fleet by Saturday to further bring down the cancellations and taking the total plane count to 66.

“Network has been rejigged. On routes with lesser demand, 78 seater Q400 has been put and Boeing 737 NGs have been withdrawn and put on alternate sectors,” a source in the airline said.

In the sectors where the airline is already running multiple flights, SpiceJet has decided to curtail the operations by one flight and has clubbed the flights, deploying the freed up aircraft on the MAX routes.

A 24*7 war room has also been created with core middle management to coordinate with teams, the source added.

On Wednesday, India’s aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation ordered the suspension of Boeing MAX fleet operations in the Indian airspace citing safety concerns in the aftermath of Ethiopian Air crash.

The crash was the second such fatal accident in the same aircraft model-Boeing 737 MAX-8-in just under five months.

Initial reports from the accident suggest that the aircraft had some flight control issues, however, the manufacturer Boeing and investigative bodies are yet to ascertain the reason behind the tragedy, which took lives of all 157 people on board the plane.
