04:39 PM EDT, 07/01/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Spirit AeroSystems Holdings' ( SPR ) transaction with Boeing ( BA ) and Airbus causes uncertainty at production plants in Scotland and Ireland, affecting a total of about 3,500 jobs, labor union Unite said Monday.
The transaction will split the fuselage and wings part supplier, with Boeing ( BA ) taking Spirit's commercial operations and Airbus acquiring production assets related to its A350 and A220 jets.
Nearly 2,500 jobs in Northern Ireland linked to non-Airbus production and the facility in Prestwick, Scotland, with about 1,000 workers "have been left in this position of uncertainty," Unite regional officer George Brash said in a statement.
"Unite is demanding assurances for the future of all jobs," the union said.
Boeing ( BA ) deferred MT Newswires to Spirit and Airbus for comment.
"We are committed to working through this process in a way that limits disruption for our employees," a Spirit spokesperson said in an email to MT Newswires. "We are confident reuniting Boeing ( BA ) and Spirit, we will have greater integration and the ability to work together in a quicker, more efficient and streamlined manner. We can't speak on behalf of Boeing ( BA ) regarding their specific plans for post-transaction closing."
Airbus did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
