Spotify Says Apple Approves App Update With External Payment Links
May 26, 2025 12:12 AM

08:25 AM EDT, 05/02/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Spotify Technology ( SPOT ) said Friday that Apple ( AAPL ) has approved its US app update, allowing it to show pricing information and to provide links to purchase subscriptions directly through the app, and use a variety of payment options other than Apple's ( AAPL ) system.

The updated version of the music streaming platform follows a federal judge's order on Thursday for Apple ( AAPL ) to stop violating a 2021 injunction requiring it to open the App Store to rivals on antitrust grounds, according to media reports.

"This means that Apple ( AAPL ) will now have to stop restricting developers' ability to communicate with their customers free of charge," Spotify ( SPOT ) said. "The fact that we haven't been able to deliver these basic services, which were permitted by the judge's order four years ago, is absurd," Spotify ( SPOT ) said Thursday.

Apple ( AAPL ) did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.

Apple ( AAPL ) shares were more than 3% lower in premarket trading Friday.
