A spyware, dubbed as ANDROIDOS_MOBSTSPY', has been banned on the Google Play Store as it is capable of stealing user data from smartphones, including WhatsApp data, reported NewsBytesApp.
It was detected by security researchers at Trend Micro and it affected people from nearly 200 countries, with most being from India, the report said, adding that the spyware was downloaded at least 100,000 times by Android users.
It looked like any other games and apps on the Play Store so that it can attract more users and then steal their information.
The Spyware include apps such as 'Flappy Bird', its dog-based clone 'Flappy Birr Dog', and general-purpose apps named 'FlashLight, HZPermis Pro Arabe, Win7imulator, Win7Launcher'.
When the app hosting the spyware was installed, it checked and established internet connection with its command and control server. According to researchers the spyware is capable of stealing almost everything from the infected device which includes data ranging from call logs, contacts, and personal messages to audio, video files and photos on the device, the report said.
Even social media platforms like WhatsApp, Snapchat and Facebook are not protected from the spyware, the researchers said.
