Startup Street: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos promises to export goods worth $10 billion in 5 years
Jan 15, 2020 1:01 PM

Amazon founder and world's richest man Jeff Bezos, who is in India for a three-day visit, on Wednesday promising to export goods worth $10 billion that are made in India in five years said that 21st century will be an Indian Century.

Speaking at the Amazon India event, which was organised to connect with small business owners in India in the national capital, Bezos promised to export goods worth $10 billion that are made in India in five years. He also asserted that the alliance between India and the US will be the most important in the 21st century.

Bezos visit comes days after the Competition Commission of India (CCI) launched a probe against Amazon and Flipkart over allegations of unfair business practices.

Amazon is betting big on India and Bezos announced a billion dollar investment to digitise small and medium businesses.

He arrived to the country on Tuesday amid criticism from traders association which accused Bezos of "predatory pricing" and "anti-competitive practises".

Traders association also held protests across multiple cities. Amazon, however, has denied all the charges.

Bala Sarda of Vahdam Tea, Vivek Goyal of Playshifu and Tanvi Johri of CARMESI were the winners of the Amazon Smbhav.

Bala Sarda of Vahdam Tea said: “Today the rules of retail have changed, with the onset of e-commerce, with the onset of social media you can create a brand sitting at your home and can start overnight. Platforms like Amazon and other market places to reach millions of consumers across the world. Online gives you reach which you can't get otherwise today.”

Vivek Goyal of Playshifu said: “One of the biggest thing that we have seen with the platforms like Amazon is to tell our story. If you go down the traditional retail route you never get a chance to tell your story, the consumers don’t connect to you at that level it takes many more years to do that. We have reached to more than thousand schools via Amazon.”

Tanvi Johri of CARMESI said: “For me and my category education is what very important piece and women were just buying products and distribution was the main centre point of the brands that are toady the most established brands in this category."

"For me to advent this pace in a way that I will sell online and to be able to educate the customers about the brand, how my products are different and why should a customer pay more for a product that is easily accessible already in retail stores. Online played a major role in creating that education.”
