09:48 AM EDT, 10/07/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Stellantis ( STLA ) said Monday it filed eight more lawsuits against the United Auto Workers union and 23 local unions on Oct. 4, which led to a meeting with the UAW on Saturday.
The new suits follow an initial lawsuit on Oct. 3 against the UAW and UAW Local 230, which represents the Los Angeles parts distribution center, Stellantis ( STLA ) said.
Stellantis ( STLA ) workers represented by the UAW at the Los Angeles parts distribution center voted to authorize the union to call a strike if grievances over US investments aren't resolved, the union had said Friday.
Stellantis ( STLA ) said Monday the UAW has made a proposal to reinstitute an idea called the "Jobs Bank," which the company says was "a contributing factor" to its bankruptcy in 2009.
The Jobs Bank concept, which was established by General Motors ( GM ) in the 1980s and adopted by Ford (F) and Chrysler "generally prohibited the Detroit automakers from laying off employees," Stellantis ( STLA ) said Monday. "By the 2000s, Chrysler had over 2,000 employees in the Jobs Bank at a staggering cost. These employees were on active payroll, but were not allowed to perform any production work."
The automaker said it rejected the UAW's latest proposal of reinstating the Jobs Bank concept, noting that the proposal "would revert to prebankruptcy terms and conditions that would jeopardize the company's future."
The UAW union didn't immediately respond to a request for comment sent Monday by MT Newswires.
