07:08 AM EDT, 10/01/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Taiwan has reportedly pushed back from a US idea to a 50-50 chip production agreement, which was raised by US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, multiple media outlets reported late Tuesday, citing a Taiwanese official.
"Our negotiating team has never made any commitment to a 50-50 split on chips. Rest assured, we did not discuss this issue during this round of talks, nor would we agree to such conditions," Reuters reported, citing Taiwan Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun as saying in a statement upon returning from the US.
Lutnick told NewsNation in an interview over the weekend that there should be a 50-50 split in chip production.
"So the idea that I pitched them was, let's get to 50 50. We're producing half and you're producing half," Lutnick said during the interview.
The US Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
