11:45 AM EDT, 10/22/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing ( TSM ) said Tuesday it had notified the US Department of Commerce about a potential issue related to restrictions on chip exports to China.
"We proactively communicated with the US Commerce Department regarding the matter in the report," Taiwan Semiconductor said in a statement to MT Newswires after The Information recently reported that the US Department of Commerce was investigating whether the company has been making artificial intelligence or smartphone chips using US technology for China's Huawei Technologies in violation of US export controls.
Taiwan Semiconductor said it was not aware of any investigation at this time.
The company also said it "has not supplied to Huawei since mid-September 2020" and that it is "committed to complying with all applicable rules and regulations, including applicable export controls."
The Financial Times, citing two people familiar with the situation, reported Tuesday that Taiwan Semiconductor recently alerted the Commerce Department after a customer placed orders for a chip similar to Huawei's Ascend 910B, a processor designed for large language model training. A precursor of the 910B chip was manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor before the US export ban was imposed, according to the report.
Shares of the company were down 1.4% in recent trading.
