Telecom department says SIM cards issued via Aadhaar won't be disconnected
Oct 18, 2018 12:10 AM

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Thursday dispelled media report that suggested that nearly half of India’s mobile phones with Aadhaar KYC could be disconnected.

The DoT and Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), in a joint statement, said the news was completely untrue and imaginary.

"... there is absolutely no reason for panic or fear at all. People should not believe in such rumours," the statement said.

The Times of India reported that over 50 crore mobile connections or almost half of India's phone population could be disconnected if SIM cards procured on the basis of Aadhaar verification are not backed up by a fresh identification, reported

This follows the Supreme Court order restricting the use of Aadhaar information by private companies including telcos and banks.
