Tesla Not Interested in Making Cars in India, Heavy Industries Minister Reportedly Says
Jun 2, 2025 7:39 AM

10:29 AM EDT, 06/02/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla (TSLA) is not interested in producing cars in India, media outlets reported Monday, citing the federal minister for heavy industries, HD Kumaraswamy.

The electric vehicle maker is opening showrooms instead, Kumaraswamy told reporters, according to Indian news agency ANI.

The minister said many European companies have shown interest in producing units in the country under its new EV policy, the report said.

The policy, originally designed to attract Tesla to establish manufacturing in India, will cut import taxes for foreign carmakers that promise to invest in domestic EV production lines, Reuters reported.

Tesla and the Ministry of Heavy Industries didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
