08:49 AM EDT, 03/12/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla's (TSLA) Autopilot and Full Self-Driving technology and nine other assisted-diving systems by major automakers have received "poor" ratings from the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the organization said Tuesday in a report.
"Some drivers may feel that partial automation makes long drives easier, but there is little evidence it makes driving safer," IIHS President David Harkey said. "As many high-profile crashes have illustrated, it can introduce new risks when systems lack the appropriate safeguards."
The report also said that vehicles having partial automation are not self-driving as the human driver still oversees a lot of manual tasks.
"While most partial automation systems have some safeguards in place to help ensure drivers are focused and ready, these initial tests show that they're not robust enough," the report added.
The institute said it expected technology enhancements to be "rapid," adding that systems should be able to track if a driver's head and eyes are directed at the road and whether a driver's hands are on the steering wheel.
The only system that attained an "acceptable" rating was the Lexus LS Teammate system.
Tesla did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
