Tesla Remote Vehicle Movement Technology Under Probe by US Regulator
Jan 7, 2025 5:17 AM

07:51 AM EST, 01/07/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla's (TSLA) Smart Summon and Actually Smart Summon features that allow users to remotely move vehicles on their smartphones are under investigation by the Office of Defects Investigation of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The regulatory agency said it received one complaint alleging that an Actually Smart Summon session resulted in a crash and that it has reviewed at least three media accounts of similar incidents.

The four crashes involved Tesla vehicles in Actually Smart Summon mode for failing to detect objects or parked vehicles.

The agency said it has also received 12 Smart Summon-related crashes.

"ODI is aware of multiple crash allegations, involving both Smart Summon and Actually Smart Summon, where the user had too little reaction time to avoid a crash, either with the available line of sight or releasing the phone app button, which stops the vehicle's movement," the regulator said.

It added that Tesla has not reported any crashes despite requirements that it report such incidents on publicly accessible roads.

Tesla did not immediately reply to MT Newswires' request for comment.
