03:21 PM EDT, 07/11/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla (TSLA) has not yet applied for the permits needed to operate driverless taxis in California, media reports said, citing spokespersons from the state's Department of Motor Vehicles.
CEO Elon Musk announced plans on Thursday to expand the company's robotaxi service to the San Francisco Bay Area within two months, Reuters previously said.
DMV representatives said Tesla has not submitted applications for either driverless testing or deploying autonomous vehicles, according to media reports.
The California Public Utilities Commission also confirmed Tesla has not filed for any new permits beyond a charter-party carrier license, which is used for employee transport with drivers, according to Reuters.
In Arizona, Tesla recently began the process to gain approval for an autonomous ride-sharing service, including driverless operations, Reuters said, citing the state's transportation department.
Arizona state officials expect to decide on the application by the end of July. However, California regulators did not provide a timeline for their own review process, according to Reuters.
Tesla and California's Department of Motor Vehicles did not immediately respond to requests for a comment from MT Newswires.
