07:22 AM EDT, 10/18/2024 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla's (TSLA) Full Self-Driving technology is subject to a preliminary investigation by the Office of Defects Investigation over "failure of the system engineering controls to react appropriately to reduced roadway visibility conditions," the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said late Thursday.
The investigation comes after four crashes involving Tesla vehicles equipped with FSD. The agency said one of the crashes resulted in a fatal pedestrian incident, and another crash involved a reported injury.
The investigation may impact a total of 2,410,002 Tesla vehicles.
The models where FSD is optionally available include Model Year (MY) 2016-2024 Models S and X, 2017-2024 Model 3, 2020-2024 Model Y, and 2023-2024 Cybertruck.
The Preliminary Evaluation will assess Tesla FSD's ability to detect and respond to reduced roadway visibility conditions. The investigation will also focus on identifying if any other similar Tesla FSD crashes occurred under reduced visibility conditions and if so, contributing factors.
