Tesla's Roadway 'Degradation Detection' System Faces US Safety Investigation
Mar 19, 2026 5:53 AM

08:36 AM EDT, 03/19/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Tesla's (TSLA) "degradation detection" system is being investigated by the US auto safety regulator for its effectiveness in identifying degraded road conditions, the regulator said Wednesday.

The probe by the US Office of Defects Investigation will assess the driver- assistance system's ability to detect reduced roadway visibility and alert drivers with sufficient time to respond.

The investigation covers more than 3.2 million vehicles across multiple models, including Model S, X, 3, Y and Cybertruck.

The regulator said Tesla's degradation detection system, both before and after an update, has failed to detect or warn the driver appropriately under degraded visibility conditions such as glare and airborne obscurants.

The agency has identified nine crashes linked to the issue, including one fatal incident, and said additional crashes in similar conditions were found where drivers were not given enough time to respond.

Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires.
