The government is unable to sustain its governance on institutions and it does not know how to manage institutions of high quality, said Amit Mitra, finance minister, West Bengal.
The centre should learn how the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and government work together as has been through the decades. This is only the symptom of a disease and the disease is the incapacity to govern,” Mitra told CNBC-TV18.
Mitra's comments came after reports said that the government is showing no signs of backing down on the contentious issues with RBI. Just days after the marathon RBI board meeting, government sources said December 14 will focus on governance issues.
The government has also asserted that RBIs board is supreme and there is no ambiguity around it. However, former RBI governor’s and board members disagree as they say the law is being misinterpreted.
It is not the law which creates a problem, the law is supposed to be created generally to deal with general situations, said senior lawyer and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi.
“The problem is how we use or misuse the law. We have had the RBI for decades. We have had these institutions for decades. The point is when you are bent upon misusing the law and undermining, the best way to do it, is to do it from within," he said.
