Trump AI Memo Seen Easing Pentagon-Anthropic Dispute
Jun 5, 2026 4:57 PM

07:32 PM EDT, 06/05/2026 (MT Newswires) -- President Donald Trump signed a memorandum directing U.S. national security agencies to prioritize working with multiple artificial intelligence providers, a move that follows a lengthy dispute between the Pentagon and Anthropic, Bloomberg reported Friday.

The memo requires agencies to ensure AI vendors cannot interrupt government operations once their technology is embedded in national security systems and calls for ending relationships with companies that seek to undermine the chain of command.

However, the directive stops short of requiring agencies to designate such firms as supply-chain risks or adopt the Pentagon's standard allowing all lawful uses of AI. Those issues were central to the Pentagon's clash with Anthropic over the company's proposed restrictions on military use of its technology.

According to Bloomberg, some Trump administration officials view the memorandum as potentially giving the Pentagon political cover to back away from its claim that Anthropic posed a supply-chain threat while expanding the number of AI suppliers used across national security agencies.
